UU Action NH Supports HB 628: Family and Medical Leave Insurance

Unitarian Universalist Action New Hampshire endorses the passage of House Bill 628: Family and Medical Leave Insurance.

HB 628 creates a program that would provide a temporary, partial wage replacement to working people who need time off to care for themselves or a family member. The Department of Employment Security would administer the program that is funded by workers’ wages. Through this program, workers would contribute 0.5% of their wages, averaging $5 per week. You can learn more about HB 628 here.

A key principle that unites the Unitarian Universalist faith “is the inherent worth and dignity of every person.” This principle is a moral guide that shapes our faith and calls us to support legislation that creates justice, equity, and compassion in our society. We believe that HB 628 plays a key role in addressing the current economic inequality in America. Ending economic inequality is essential in order to establish a society that recognizes the dignity of all. By helping to pass HB 528, UUANH hopes to do a small part in answering the call to confront escalating inequality that the Unitarian Universalist General Assembly put to all UUs in 2014.

We encourage Unitarian Universalists in New Hampshire to contact their Representatives and encourage them to vote for HB 628. As of November 27, 2017, the House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on this bill is on January 3, 2018. You can look up your Representatives here. When talking your representative, we encourage you to use the script below. Of course, you can modify the script as you wish.

Hello Representative _________________,

My name is (Your Name) and I live on (Your Street), and I live your district. I am calling to encourage you to vote in support of HB 628. HB 628, Family and Medical Leave Insurance, will keep qualified workers in our state’s labor market by making it easier for workers to fulfill their caregiving duties.

Access to paid family and medical leave helps aging workers stay in the workforce, increases the odds of success for working people recovering from substance use disorder, and leads to higher workforce participation among new parents. For these reasons, the vast majority of New Hampshire residents and employers support this program.

HB 628 will make our state healthier, safer, and stronger. Please support this bill! Thank you.
