Act Now to Raise the Wage in NH!

July 1, 2019

UU Action NH joined several of our allies this morning to hear from legislators who announced they will take the Minimum Wage Challenge as part of their support for Senate Bill 10, the NH minimum wage bill. They also called upon Governor Sununu to sign SB 10.

The NH House and Senate have left for their summer recess, but Governor Sununu still has a chance to sign SB 10, the minimum wage bill that would re-establish the minimum wage in NH and gradually increase it to $12/hour. SB 10 was a compromise bill; Rep. Kris Schultz, who was in attendance, favored a bill that would raise the minimum wage to $15/hour.

Representatives Kris Schultz, Mark King, Brian Sullivan as well as Senator Dan Feltes, took the Minimum Wage Challenge, which consists of them living this week as though they only had $290. Because NH has no state minimum wage, the default minimum is the federal minimum wage of $7.25/hour. Minimum wage workers who work 40 hours a week therefore only earn $290. Congress last raised the federal minimum wage on July 24, 2009, almost a decade ago.

After the press conference, the legislators and audience visited Governor Sununu’s office to urge him to sign SB 10. As a gift, they left him pens engraved with the phrase, “Raise the Minimum Wage”, so that he would have a pen to sign this bill into law.

The Raise Up NH coalition has had volunteers visit Gov. Sununu’s office in support of SB 10 every day since the bill passed on June 27.

Unitarian Universalists affirm, as part of the Second Principle, “Justice, equity and compassion in human relations”. It is unjust for people’s work to be so devalued that they cannot support themselves by working forty hours a week. Re-establishing the minimum wage a step towards creating justice and equity in the Granite State.

UU Action NH encourages you to call Governor Sununu’s office to ask him to sign SB 10, the minimum wage bill. You can reach his office at (603) 271-2121.
